Learning The Sciences is an essential part of any young person’s education, creating opportunities for students to develop not just core subject knowledge but the skills of collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and problem solving – all crucial for action in our personal, social and economic lives. At Cathedral we motivate and encourage students to explore how they can apply their mathematical and scientific understanding creatively and efficiently.
The mathematics and science curriculum is carefully sequenced to provide students in our Junior, Middle and Senior Schools critical skills and foundational concepts which can later be used in increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding. Each year our students participate in the Australian Mathematics Trust, just one of many challenges that engage students to employ mathematical strategies in a practical way. These competitions are an ideal platform for students to collaborate in the development of solutions to real-world problems and serve to build on numeracy skills as well as develop confidence and a natural curiosity in the world of mathematics.
Senior students continue to access the power of mathematical and scientific reasoning with a high expectation that all students engage with Mathematics in their VCE. This links in closely with Cathedral’s cross-disciplinary curriculum of STEAM subjects and our partnerships with tertiary education providers.
