Supporting our wider community

Cathedral College Wangaratta’s Parents and Friends Association (P&F) recently made a generous donation of $4,500 to the ‘Wig Room’, which is part of the Oncology Department at Northeast Health Wangaratta. The Wig Room enables women undergoing cancer treatment to access a wide range of wigs free of charge.

During a visit to the Oncology unit, P&F President Hannah Clancy, along with Ladies Day organisers and P&F members Anita Hamilton and Kristy Ryan, had the opportunity to meet Anne Coutts, a dedicated volunteer who manages the Wig Room. Anne, a retired hairdresser and volunteer plays a crucial role in providing support and confidence to women navigating their cancer journey.

The funds were raised at the College’s inaugural Ladies' Day, held last year at Henley’s Wine Bar. The event brought together over 150 women for a day of fun and friendship, all in support of the College and building community spirit and connection. Half of the money raised went to this important cause. The committee extends a heartfelt thanks to the many local businesses that generously donated time, auction and raffle items, contributing to the event’s outstanding success.

"We are incredibly grateful for the community’s support in making Ladies Day such a success," said P&F President Hannah Clancy. "This donation will make a real difference in the lives of local women facing cancer."

Thanks to the donation, the Wig Room now boasts a variety of additional wigs. “I was able to buy 29 wigs to add to our collection, which I call ‘my girls", explained Anne. “The Wig Room provides our patients with the choice of loaning a wig of their choosing and having it styled as they like. It is a privilege to be able to help these incredible ladies during this challenging time of their lives”.

Event organiser Anita Hamilton reflected on the event's success, saying, "It was truly special to not only spend a great day celebrating with friends but also to witness the incredible impact that a united community of women can have. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses and the way they rallied behind this cause. Their support speaks volumes about the strength of our community and the kindness that exists within it."

Cathedral College Wangaratta’s P&F Association remains committed to supporting meaningful initiatives and looks forward to continuing its fundraising efforts in the future, not only for the College community and students but also for other local community groups.
