Meet Maggie - CCW's 2025 Environment and Sustainability Captain
I joined Cathedral College Wangaratta in Year Seven after attending Glenrowan Primary School. In Year Ten, I had the incredible opportunity to spend a year in Denmark as part of an exchange program. It was an unforgettable experience that broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for different cultures.
This year, I’m studying Geography, Environmental Science, English, Politics, and Math Methods. Looking ahead, I plan to take a gap year to travel and explore more of the world, and then I hope to study Global Studies or Art at university.
I applied to be the Environment and Sustainability Captain because environmental issues have always been close to home—both of my parents work in environmentally focused careers, which has inspired my passion for nature and sustainability. I love spending time outdoors and want to contribute to making a positive impact.
In my role, I applied for a Junior Landcare Biodiversity Grant to support the planting of 326 native trees and shrubs. This project will create a nature corridor and provide a visual screen in preparation for the proposed development along Clarkes Lane. I’m really excited that this initiative will involve the wider community—Landcare Wangaratta has already offered to help with the planting, which is a fantastic show of support.
Recently, I spoke at Chapel for World Environment Day on the topic of plastic pollution, sharing ideas on what we can do—both individually and as a school—to reduce our environmental footprint.
My hope is to inspire a stronger sense of environmental care across the College and to encourage others to see the value in protecting and nurturing the world around us.
